Valley of Palaces and Gardens

Valley of Palaces and Gardens

Valley of Palaces and Gardens is an area of approximately 100 km2 located in the Jelenia Góra Valley, between the Rudawy Janowickie and the Karkonosze Mountains, where there are almost 30 objects of secular architecture. This is the largest saturation of this type of objects in Central and Eastern Europe. On such a small area we will find a variety of types of knights' and noble residences, starting from: medieval residential towers, castles, Renaissance manors, Baroque palaces and 19th-century palace and park complexes, giving the region a unique character. In the era of Romanticism, the local residences were surrounded by extensive landscape parks using the natural values of the landscape. Due to the short distances, the park complexes were connected by historic alleys, blending into the hills, forests and clearings. It was here that the most distinguished European families had their estates: the Habsburgs, Hohenzollerns, Schaffgotschs, Czartoryskis and Radziwiłłs. The land lying at the foot of Śnieżka was also appreciated by artists, nature lovers and travelers from all over Europe and America, including Fryderyk Chopin, Johann Wolfgang Goethe, John Quincy Adams and Alexander von Humboldt.
